Tuesday, October 8 2024, 12:40 PM - 1:20 PM
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Price: Free (Student) Free (Others)

Join us as we explore the unique challenges of equality and diversity in STEM, from overcoming gender bias and stereotypes to navigating underrepresentation and limited mentorship. Dr. Anouk Hubrechsen and Dr. Jasmina Lazendic-Galloway will shed light on these obstacles by sharing their journeys and discuss strategies for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

In their lectures, Anouk and Jasmina will share their life stories of perseverance, setbacks, and accomplishments. They will delve into the challenges of gaining recognition and credit for their work, as well as the impact of institutional policies on their progress.

Dr. Jasmina Lazendic-Galloway (a.k.a. Dr J), a stellar astrophysicist (pun intended) and a dynamic advocate for equity and diversity, will share insights into why gender equality is a win-win for everyone. Jasmina has been a passionate champion for equity and diversity. She ran programs for students and staff focused on developing inclusive leadership and led several impactful initiatives at Monash University and beyond. These include founding the Women in Space Chapter for the National Space Society of Australia and serving as a mentor for the Space4Women program under the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs.

Dr. Anouk Hubrechsen will share a story from a deep-tech startup founder on hard lessons learned on human acceptance, our (in)ability to change, and how to leverage that in building a great company culture. Anouk is the CEO of ANTENNEX B.V., a company that develops and sells testing systems for next-generation wireless devices. The company is based on the research she performed at the TU/e, where she received her PhD and MSc in 2023 and 2019, respectively. She was a guest researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, CO, USA in 2018 and 2019, and is currently also a guest researcher at the TU/e. She has received several awards such as the Vederprijs in 2024, and the Zonta Women in Technology Regional and District awards in 2019.

Your role is vital in addressing these societal challenges. Foster an inclusive and respectful environment by challenging stereotypes, advocating for equal opportunities, and becoming each other’s allies in your professional journey. So be part of this event and feel encouraged to ask your questions at the end of the lecture.
