From the long-study fine and rising interest rates on student loans to the reintroduction of the basic scholarship, there's a lot going on that affects our wallets. Recent research shows that as many as 44% of students are worried about their student debt. It’s high time to discuss this together!
Please note that this program will last until 13:40 hrs. It will not be possible to leave the hall earlier.
This program is organized in collaboration with TU/e’s largest student party in the University Council, Groep-één.
Today’s program is packed with insights on the latest developments in student finance. Two key organizations that focus on the financial situation of students will share their insights and answer your questions:
- Nibud: a Dutch organization that researches people’s spending habits. They recently presented a new study on the financial situation of MBO, HBO and WO students.
- LSVb: the Landelijke Studentenvakbond (LSVb) has been a strong voice for student interests for decades. It focuses on topics such as the financial situation of students as well as study accessibility.
- Skere Student: This platform offers practical tips and tricks to help students manage their finances more effectively.
Speakers
Annette Groen, a researcher at Nibud, provides policymakers and institutions with valuable insights into household finances in the Netherlands and advises on the development of policies and methodologies based on these insights. She focuses on addressing financial challenges faced by young people, specifically those aged 18-27, with the goal of preventing and reducing debt. By equipping young adults with the tools to manage their finances effectively, she also helps them unlock their potential and make the most of their opportunities.
Ocke Siertsema is the current vice-chair of the LSVb. She has personal experience regarding study pressure, financial stress and settling in a new city. As vice-chair, she’s responsible for key areas such as political connections, education funding, digitalization and legal support. Together with her fellow board members, she represents and defends students' interests, for example by helping to organize demonstrations against financial cuts in education.
Anna Hulshoff is a content creator for Skere Student. She is studying medicine in Amsterdam and is well aware of the struggles that students face when it comes to finances. Together with Skere Student, she helps students to improve their financial situations.
Optional workshop after the lecture
After the program, Groep-één has invited Skere Student to host a workshop titled “The Cash Book Class” to help you better understand your finances and find ways to save. This workshop will take place from 14:00 to 15:00, during which you can enjoy coffee, tea and something sweet. If you would like to participate in this workshop, you need to sign up separately via this link.
Group-één
This program is organized together with Groep-één, a student group that’s all about making students’ voices heard in the University Council. They tackle everything from education to campus improvements, making life at TU/e better for everyone. The financial situation of students and the university regularly comes up in Council discussions, which is why Groep-één is keen to address these concerns and offer support.
Don't forget to vote in the elections for the 2025 University Council this December.
