While the war in Ukraine continues and its people endure deadly and devastating attacks daily, great efforts are being made to plan for rebuilding. Dutch architect Fulco Treffers, based in Kyiv, gives a firsthand account on what it’s like to aid the recovery and reconstruction of a country at war.

This lecture is part of a larger event organized by AEGEE-Eindhoven, the local branch of a European student network active in over 100 cities. The lecture is followed by an in-depth discussion and free lunch; see below for more info and registration.

Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities are being shelled by Russia every single day. While many news outlets focus on the destruction and casualties caused by drone and missile strikes, and the discord on the global political stage, another aspect of daily reality often remains underexposed: the enormous effort that goes into restoring, rebuilding and strengthening the built environment across Ukraine.

This lecture offers a unique opportunity to hear from someone with firsthand experience working in Ukraine to confront reconstruction challenges. Architect and Ro3kvit co-founder Fulco Treffers will discuss the difficulties of rebuilding a war-torn country. These challenges extend far beyond architecture and are deeply intertwined with social and political dimensions.

Ir. Fulco Treffers is a Dutch architect and urban designer who studied Architecture at TU/e. He is the director of the Dutch studio 12N Urban Matters, the co-founder of Ro3kvit, an urban coalition for Ukraine, and a former director of the Temporary Art Centre in Eindhoven. Treffers won national and international awards for the Space-S project, a social housing block, co-designed by its residents.
