How did a pilot write and illustrate one of the most translated books in the world? Writer, translator and Dutch comedian Erik van Muiswinkel explores the extraordinary story behind The Little Prince.

What makes The Little Prince such an enduring success? Is it a fairy tale, an allegory, a children’s book, or a philosophical essay disguised as one?

First published in New York during the Second World War, in 1942, Le Petit Prince appeared in both French and English. Its author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was a pilot by profession. How did he create not only this remarkable story, but also its unforgettable illustrations? And how had Saint-Ex, as his friends called him, become internationally famous long before The Little Prince appeared?

There are more mysteries to explore. What happened to the Little Prince after he left Earth? And is it a coincidence that Saint-Exupéry, who disappeared during a flight in 1944, was never found, just like his fictional creation?

Translated into some 650 languages and dialects, Le Petit Prince continues to be read across the world. It has inspired theatre productions, films, museums, research and institutions bearing its name.

In this illustrated literary lecture, writer, translator and Dutch comedian Erik van Muiswinkel, who translated The Little Prince into Dutch, explores the book’s remarkable history, its creator and the questions surrounding them.
