Who will be the next President of the United States of America? This is the burning question that will be answered on Tuesday, November 5, when the Americans go to the polls. NOS reporter Simone Tukker will discuss the latest developments in the election battle, as well as societal sentiments and other factors that could be decisive.

The world is watching with great excitement: will Kamala Harris – the first female presidential candidate of color and, at (almost) 60, significantly younger than her rival – regain the trust of her Democratic supporters and the faith of Americans in this election? Or will the 78-year-old former President Donald “Honest Don” Trump win the election despite the four criminal cases that are still following him? America is heading toward a close and very heated presidential election. After the huge surprise in 2016, this time until two months ago, there was serious anticipation that Trump would once again assume the most powerful political position in the world. But the flying start Harris has made after she took over the candidacy from incumbent President Joe Biden who unexpectedly dropped out of the election race only a few months ago has put a surprisingly exciting twist on the presidential race.
The state of the economy, social unrest in society, the crisis at the US-Mexico border, positions on geopolitical conflicts such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza ... not to mention the Democrats’ crisis of confidence and the scandals that continue to haunt the Republican nominee. There are several factors that could affect the election result. Just before she travels to the States in November to report, Simone Tukker will discuss the course of the elections in a country she knows as a land of extremes.

Simone Tukker has been reporting from the US since Obama’s re-election in 2012. This year will be her fourth US presidential election. After graduating with a BA in American Studies and an MA in Journalism, she interned in Washington D.C. for the NOS, the Dutch national broadcaster. Since then, she has worked as a news reporter, covering the news and stories in the Netherlands and abroad, with a work field covering the US, Mexico, Niger, and Europe.
