Lecture

A Sneak Peek at the Cybercrime Ecosystem

Dr. Luca Allodi
Wednesday, February 26 , 12:40 PM - 1:20 PM
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Price: Free (Student) Free (Others)

Computers and embedded systems are all around and becoming more connected every day. This creates new functions, but also opens more ways to launch increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. Cybersecurity has now become one of the most important, and most multidisciplinary, areas of research in computer science. In the wake of the cyberattack on TU/e, we're taking a closer look at the world of cybercrime and cybersecurity, and what it all means for you as a user.

On 12 January, TU/e was hit by a cyberattack that affected all digital systems and led to a week-long shutdown of education and research. The subsequent DDoS attacks on various other institutional infrastructures also makes it clear that our society is vulnerable to attacks, and that the impact of hacks can be large.

In this lecture, TU/e researcher Luca Allodi gives an overview of what's happening inside the cybercrime ecosystem. He will discuss the complex interplay between attackers and defenders, the generation of threats, how developments in AI play into this and how you, as an individual user, can protect yourself and your workplace from cybercrime.

Dr. Luca Allodi is an Associate Professor and head of the Threat Analysis group within the Security Cluster of TU/e. He investigates attacker operations, economics, and how these are ultimately delivered to the (human) user, to improve operational defense capabilities. His research draws from several fields, including computer security, economics, risk analysis, and criminology.
