Any student looking for a place to live in Eindhoven is familiar with the problem: availability is limited, and rents are (too) high. This is a serious problem that requires both a local and a national approach. The DAS Housing Committee represents the interests and wishes of students and lobbies policymakers to make improvements to the situation. At the invitation of DAS, Alderman Mieke Verhees (PvdA) will explain what the city of Eindhoven is doing to address this dire situation.
This program is organized in collaboration with TU/e’s student association DAS Eindhoven in the run up to the elections for the 2025 University Council this December.
For many students, 'moving out' is one of the most valuable aspects of student life - a natural step toward independence and an opportunity to fully engage in student life. However, for some years now, moving out is no longer guaranteed. The shortage of student accommodation is huge, and rents have skyrocketed. This national problem – estimated to result in a shortfall of 23,100 housing units this year and in the worst-case scenario will more than double in the next few years – has persisted for some time. Now, Eindhoven also falls into the category of cities where the student housing market is classified as extremely tight. The shortage also brings with it an accumulation of subsequent problems, such as students missing out on the ‘uitwonende basisbeurs’ (basic student grant for students living away from home) by living in non-registrable addresses, and rogue landlords exploiting their tenants. This is also a troubling development for the Brainport region of Eindhoven, where students are a vital resource, and attracting talent from both within the country and abroad is essential.
In recent years, the National Action Plan for Student Housing 2022-2030 (Landelijk actieplan studentenhuisvesting 2022-2030) has been initiated, and both the university and the municipality are also working on initiatives under the Eindhoven Student Housing Covenant 2021-2028 (Convenant studentenhuisvesting 2021-2028) to address the situation. The question remains whether these initiatives will ultimately solve the problem. In the meantime, how can current students be accommodated?
Mieke Verhees (PvdA), alderman for Housing, Neighborhoods, Spaces and Services at the Municipality of Eindhoven, will discuss the complexity of the situation, the municipality's responsibility in this matter, short- and long-term measures, and the consequences of policy decisions.
DAS Eindhoven
This program is organized together with DAS Eindhoven, one of the student factions in the University Council of the TU/e, which is the central co-determination organ of the university. DAS focuses on representing the ambitious students that want to develop themselves alongside their studies. For example, through participating in extra-curricular activities like being active in an association, student team or anything else. Aside from the University Council, DAS is also actively involved in the municipality and represents the student's voice in the ongoing discussions on student housing in Eindhoven.
