Deputy Mayor Steenbakkers Reflects on Wartime Eindhoven

In honor of the 80th anniversary of Eindhoven’s liberation Stijn Steenbakkers will look back on the turbulent wartime years and the pivotal Market Garden operation that ultimately led to Eindhoven’s freedom. Steenbakkers is Deputy Mayor and Alderman (Brainport, Economy, Education)

This program is organized in collaboration with student organization Liberation 040.

Deputy Mayor Steenbakkers will be interviewed by Liberation 040 organizer Joris van Grieken. They will talk about several topics, including life in an occupied city, where Steenbakkers will discuss the challenges and resilience required to lead during such times. They will also delve into key wartime events, offering a closer look at significant moments like the infamous Sinterklaas bombardment. Another top that will be addressed in the interview is the post-war governance and how Eindhoven played a critical role in the Netherlands' early recovery. 

The audience will have ample opportunity to ask questions. Join and reflect on this remarkable moment in our history, 80 years after Eindhoven’s liberation.

Speaker
Stijn Steenbakkers (CDA) is an alderman in Eindhoven, focused on innovation and economic development. He has a background in politics and business and is currently responsible for advancing the city's growth in technology and sustainability sectors. He works to enhance Eindhoven’s status as a leading technology hub and promotes inclusive growth. His leadership emphasizes collaboration between government, industry, and academia.

Liberation 040 Festival
This lecture is organized in collaboration with the Liberation 040 Foundation, a student organization that has been organizing the Eindhoven Liberation Festival Liberation 040 in honor of ‘September 18’ since 2018. In the run-up to the festival on Saturday 14 September, various activities are organized to promote knowledge and awareness among young people and students about the Second World War, the liberation of Eindhoven, and living in freedom today.
