A platoon of Navy SEALs embark on a dangerous mission in Ramadi, Iraq, an operation retold through their raw, personal memories of the chaos of war and brotherhood. Narratively cut to the bone and geared up with superb filmmaking craft, Warfare evokes the primal terror of combat with unnerving power.

Genre: docudrama, war epic, action
Language: English subtitles: Dutch
Length: 1h 35 m.

Iraq War, 2006. A U.S. Navy SEAL unit is holed up in the home of an Iraqi family for a dangerous mission in Ramadi. With snipers, the soldiers monitor all movements of the “enemy” in minute detail, yet they fail to prevent a major ambush. Under heavy fire, the operation gets completely out of hand, resulting in serious injuries. As the soldiers make every effort to keep the wounded alive and desperately wait for rescue, their situation becomes increasingly dire: how long can they hold out?

The film is based on the memories of Iraq veteran Ray Mendoza, who wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film with Alex Garland (Civil War).

This special screening is organized in relation to Liberation 040 festival, a student-led celebration of freedom, happening on Saturday 13 September.

Reviews

“The incident depicted in Warfare may have happened nearly two decades ago, but the film seems as fresh as today’s headlines.” San Francisco Chronicle

“This is a movie that’s as difficult to watch as it is to forget. It’s a sensory blitz, a percussive nightmare and a relentless assault on the soul.” The Times

“As courageous as the platoon members are, Warfare is not to be confused with a movie about heroism; it’s a movie about hell that leaves you shaken.” The Hollywood Reporter
