When Rona leaves behind the hustle and bustle of London with all its alcohol and drugs and returns to the breathtaking nature of Scotland's Orkney Islands, she finds herself little by little.

Genre: drama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 118 minutes

The Outrun is the candid film adaptation of the British bestseller of the same name, with an Oscar-worthy lead role by Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird and Little Women).

29-year-old Rona has been living in London for 10 years, where busy city life has consumed her. Alcohol and drugs take over, until she decides to put her physical and mental health first. To overcome her addictions once and for all, she returns to the Orkney Islands where she grew up. Here, the memories of her childhood merge with the derailed life she led in London. As she surrenders to the overwhelming landscape, the wind and sea accompany Rona on her road to recovery.

This film is recommended by the Student Film Committee because: “It hits you like a crashing wave and a pounding bass drum. The vivid cinematography, sound design and intense character dynamics evoke emotions like many movies cannot.”

Awards
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Festival and was selected for the
Berlin Film Festival.

Reviews
“Is that really Saoirse Ronan playing a blackout drunk with a violent temper? It is, and against all odds, she transforms a dreary addiction drama with an emotional powerhouse of a performance that should rank her high in the Oscar race for Best Actress.” ABC News

“Saoirse Ronan does subtly spectacular work in every phase of this character’s odyssey.” Chicago Tribune

“Refuge comes in the form of Rona finally becoming comfortable in her own skin, and Fingscheidt examines this with piercing visual and sonic command...”
Little White Lies
