Language: English – subtitles: Dutch
The Lost Daughter follows an intriguing narrative as we find out more and more about Leda’s history and personality while her holiday takes an unexpected turn. An impulsive act confronts Leda with her own past and the unconventional choices she made as a young mother. What happened in her past, and who is she really?
This is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s debut as a director and is based on a book by Elena Ferrante. The film requires close watching because small hints are dropped about why Leda is acting the way she is and about what happened in the past.
This film is recommended by the Studium Generale Students’ Film Committee because it shows an unusual perspective on motherhood and the conflict between personal ambitions and needs and the role as a mother.
