The celebrity and fashion-obsessed culture of Los Angeles youth is one that Sofia Coppola knows well. A consummate insider and the daughter of the director Francis Ford Coppola, she was immediately drawn to the real-life tale of a gang of celebrity-crazed teenagers who, during a nine-month spree, broke into the homes of starlets such as Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson and Paris Hilton (several times) and stole two million pounds worth of dresses, expensive watches and, almost, Paris Hilton’s dog.
Although she insists that “I’m not part of that world”, Coppola understands the group’s craving for fame, easy fortune and luxury brands. “These kids were trying to find their identity and they wanted to be like the people whose houses they broke into,” she says. “It’s such an LA story about how these kids were living in such proximity to the stars they admired and the glitzy culture they were obsessed with. They thought that by touching the glamourous life it would make them somebody. They are products of our growing reality TV culture and it’s something I thought was worth looking into.”
