This biographical drama follows young Donald Trump in his rise as a real estate tycoon under mentor Roy Cohn in a world full of corruption, power and deceit in 1970s and 1980s America.

Genre: docudrama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 122 mins.

In his early years as a real estate entrepreneur, Donald Trump takes his first steps into the fast-paced business world and builds the foundation for his business empire under the wing of his mentor, the influential and cunning lawyer Roy Cohn. He teaches Trump three rules for winners: always attack, deny everything, and no matter what, always claim victory. Mentored by controversy, driven by ambition.

This biographical drama - obviously contested by Trump - follows his career journey in a world of corruption, deception and the drive for power in 1970s and 1980s America, and it was selected for the Competition at Cannes. Young Trump is played by Sebastian Stan (I, Tonya; Pam & Tommy), Jeremy Strong (Succession) portrays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) plays Ivana Trump. The film is directed by Ali Abbasi, who also directed Holy Spider and Gräns.

The Apprentice is recommended by the SG Student Film Committee, because: “Besides the emphasis on his mentor’s advice, this movie also gives a good glimpse of that great old Big Apple, New York City, in the 70’s and 80’s.”

Awards
At the Cannes Film Festival, the film was a nominee for the prestigious Palme d’Or. At the Golden Globes, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong received nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Reviews
“The Apprentice encapsulates the American Dream, revealing all the ways in which it can be subverted into a nightmare.” Entertainment Weekly

“The performances are stellar, the pacing both restrained and engaging, the realization of Cohn and Trump’s world is top notch, and the dynamic between the two is as captivating as any.” The A.V. Club

“Most impressive of all are the performances by Sebastian Stan as the raw and ambitious younger Trump, and Jeremy Strong as the unconscionable Cohn. This is “The Art of the Deal” told as a Frankenstein dark fable.” Chicago Sun-Times
