‘Nomadland’ shows the freedom that nomadic life holds, but doesn’t shy away from the tougher parts of life on the road such as shitting in a bucket or breaking down in the middle of the desert. Pictures of a beautiful landscape are followed by not so romantic parking lots where the nomads try to make the best of life.
This third feature film from director Chloé Zhao features real nomads such as Linda May and Swanki. The movie is inspired by Jessica Bruder’s 2017 nonfiction book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, and by the radical nomadist and anti-capitalist leader Bob Wells, who appears as himself in the film.
Award winning actress Francis McDormand blends in well with the real life nomads who mostly tell their own stories. Everyone has their reason for living on the road. These real-life stories give this film an authenticity that is not often found in American cinema.
The soundscore contains Italian piano maestro Ludovico Einaudi.
Reviews
“…Nomadland is a gentle, compassionate, questioning film about the American soul. With artistry and grace, Zhao folds nonprofessionals into an imagined story built around a cheerful, resourceful, middle-aged woman played by Frances McDormand. This quiet, self-effacing performance may be the best of her career so far.”
