How does architecture shape the way we live, love, and imagine our world? Join us for a special evening where film and architecture meet, featuring a mini architecture film festival and a talk by one of the Netherlands’ most inspiring thinkers on the built environment: Floris Alkemade.

In collaboration with the study association for Architecture and Urbanism, Anarchi, and TIAFF, we bring a taste of the Tilburg Architecture Film Festival (TIAFF) to the TU/e campus.

It’ll be an evening of cinematic stories about the spaces we build and inhabit. Expect a TIAFF ’light’ festival with a short lecture by Alkemade and three striking films that explore architecture in unexpected, emotional, and poetic ways.

About ir. Floris Alkemade
Architect and urban designer Floris Alkemade served as the Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands (2015–2021). Formerly a partner at OMA, he now leads his own firm FAA and chairs TIAFF since 2024. He has contributed to significant projects and studies worldwide, addressing both architectural and urban design scales.

Film program:

Enter through the Balcony
Roman Blazhan. Ukrainian. English subtitles. Documentary (26 min.)

The title "Enter through the Balcony" refers to how large buildings were divided into apartments during the Soviet era to address the post-war housing crisis. The film, through the eyes of owners, city officials, historians, sociologists, urban planners, developers, and architects, provides a glimpse into the balcony as a personalized appropriated space. A loving tribute to how life was in Ukrainian cities and hopefully can be again.

I’m Not Going To Cry
Małgorzata Maria Olchowska. Animation (7 min.)

Drawing and architecture merge in this short animated film, where a city is built and demolished, rebuilt, and so forth, even as waves swell. A film about impermanence and transience.

Arquitectura Emocional 1959
León Siminiani. Spanish. English subtitles. Fiction (30 min.).

Arquitectura Emocional 1959 is the love story of Sebas and Andrea, first-year students at the University of Madrid in 1958-1959. It shows how social class and ideology become insurmountable obstacles and how architecture marks the dotted line that ultimately defines their emotion.

We conclude the evening with a Q&A with Floris Alkemade.

TIAFF
Coming March the annual architecture film festival in Tilburg: TIAFF will take place. The festival programs documentaries, fiction, animation, and/or experimental films and aims to contribute to awareness and debate about the quality of our daily living environment through films and lectures.
