Young New York photographer Nev Schulman (New York) is asked by 8-year-old Abby from Michigan if she can paint some of his dance photos. He agrees, and is very impressed by the results. They become Facebook friends, in a network that includes Abby’s whole family.
But it soon becomes clear that the family members aren’t what they appear to be.
It’s well known that Facebook and other social media encourage self-promotion. Everybody tries to look their best in their public profiles; censorship and less-than-truthful details are an everyday occurrence. But Catfish reveals a form of misleading that goes a whole lot further.
