Cinderella-Anora from Brooklyn, NY will give you a stressful 48 hours to remember. Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.

Genre: romantic comedy, drama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 139 mins.

Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries Ivan, the son of a Russian oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when the parents head to New York to have the marriage annulled.

Another chronicle of America's strivers by writer-director Sean Baker (The Florida Project) given some extra pizzazz by Mikey Madison's brassy performance, Anora is a romantic drama on the bleeding edge.

Beneath the comedic surface—some have compared it to the work of the Coen Brothers—the film offers a sharp critique of contemporary America. Baker highlights social contrasts and Anora's precarious situation. Cannes jury president Greta Gerwig praised the film for its deeply human portrayal of Anora, calling it “a story that touches hearts, makes us laugh, and then breaks those same hearts.”

This film is recommended by the SG Student Film Committee, because: “Anora has a refreshing sense of realism, managing to deviate from storytelling standards without becoming boring."

Awards
Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, with Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture, Director, Screenplay, and acting nods for Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov.

Reviews
“A wonderful movie from one of the world’s best independent directors.” The Times

“Endlessly entertaining and frequently hysterical, “Anora” is one of the year’s best films and a formidable Oscar contender.“ New York Post

“Baker’s subversively romantic, free-wheeling sex farce makes "Pretty Woman" look like a Disney movie.” Variety
