Need a moment to unwind between lectures and studying? Join us for a public rehearsal by orchestra Philzuid! During this dress rehearsal, you can watch conductor Andrew Litton guide the orchestra through Shostakovich’s breathtaking Symphony No. 9.
Use your lunch break to experience something new, and meet us at the Muziekgebouw. Here we’ll be greeted by a musician from Philzuid, who will shortly introduce their orchestra before we take our seats to listen to Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony. Originally intended as the triumphant finale to his three “war symphonies,” this piece from 1945 took an unexpected turn. Instead of a grand celebration of Soviet victory and heroism, this piece premiered as a shorter, satirical work that left Stalin perplexed. From cheeky gallops with a hint of slapstick to the hauntingly melancholic bassoon solos, the Ninth is quintessentially Shostakovich.
Andrew Litton, the conductor that you’ll see in action, is the musical director of the New York City Ballet and honorary conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
So come and spend your lunch break with us, and witness how a top-tier orchestra collaborates to create a flawless performance.
