The Evolution of Mafia Film: From The Godfather to The Irishman

The mafia film is a genre that has spoken to our imagination for as long as it’s around. How has this genre evolved over time and why does it fascinate us so much?

“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” “Say hello to my little friend.” “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.” Some of the most famous movie quotes are from mafia films. Since the 1930s, we have been fascinated with this world of organized crime, violence, loyalty and rivalry.

In this film lecture*, presented by Natlab en Studium Generale, film expert Rudi de Boer discusses the evolution of the mafia film, our fascination with it, and how have famous directors like Scorsese influenced the genre.

Rudi de Boer studied Theatre, Film, and Television Sciences at Utrecht University. Here, he specialized in film history and his love for Alfred Hitchcock was born. Since then, he has been teaching anything and everything related to film for the past 15 years.

Natlab
This program is a collaboration between Natlab and Studium Generale. Natlab is the art house cinema of Eindhoven, located in the former Philips Physics Lab at Stijp-S. For the best and widest selection of high quality film, Natlab is the place to be. On top of that, they also host workshops, courses, theater, and they have a wonderful restaurant. Currently Natlab is closed due to the corona pandemic.

*we experienced two short interruptions during the livestream. And during a small portion of the lecture, the speaker accidentally and unknowingly switched to Dutch. We've fixed that for you in the video you can watch above: we've added English subtitles to the part in Dutch (use the settings wheels on the video to enable subs) and there are no interruptions anymore. Please enjoy.
