On September 18, 2024, it will be exactly 80 years since Eindhoven was liberated by the Allied forces. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Liberation 040 Festival will return to the 18 September Square (18 Septemberplein) in Eindhoven for its seventh consecutive year on September 14, 2024. Organized by Liberation 040, a non-profit run by dedicated students, this free festival will celebrate the 80th anniversary of Eindhoven’s liberation.
With a packed program starting at 12:00 PM and continuing into the night, this year's Liberation 040 promises to be an unforgettable day. Expect inspiring guest speakers, veterans sharing their stories, special exhibitions, and an impressive lineup of performers.
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a wide selection of food trucks and a large terrace on the 18 September Square. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax, enjoy great food and drinks, and take in the musical performances and speeches. There’s also plenty for children to do, with face painting and a bouncy castle. As night falls, the terrace will transform into a vibrant dance floor, where everyone can come together to celebrate freedom.
Eyes Open
The theme for this seventh edition of Liberation 040 is "Eyes Open." In the culturally diverse city of Eindhoven, where many who have fled hardship have found a new home, the festival aims to send an important message: "Eyes Open" is about being mindful of the freedom we enjoy, which should never be taken for granted. As we mark 80 years of living in a free country, it’s crucial to reflect on how that freedom was won and to foster greater appreciation for it across all generations.
This theme also emphasizes the importance of vigilance and recognizing oppression in all its forms. "Eyes Open" encourages us to open our eyes to the realities others face, to acknowledge the struggles many have endured—and continue to endure—in the pursuit of freedom, and to show solidarity and unity.
