It’s a subject not often spoken of or taught in the European schooling system: the Indigenous people of the North Americas. Time to break with that ‘tradition’.

Turtle Island Speaks: Indigenous Histories and Futures is an introductory Native American and Indigenous Studies lecture where students will have the opportunity to learn about the histories and current realities of the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, a term commonly used by Native people to refer to “North America.”

Prompted by GEWIS-student interests and their upcoming visits to the United States and Canada, this lecture will provide foundational knowledge of Indigenous identities and cultures, settler colonialism, and Indigenous resistance to the systems of oppression that have shaped, and continue to impact, their daily lives. Particular attention is given to the Indigenous lands and people most directly impacted by Dutch colonialism.
As an introductory session, the lecture will also equip participants with tools and resources to deepen their understanding of Native American and First Nations communities, their vibrant cultures, and their ongoing global influence—past, present, and future.

The lecture will be given by Ashton Pemapanik Dunkley, a Jamaican and Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape interdisciplinary historian, Ph.D Candidate University of Minnesota and from January 2026 assistant professor at Georgetown University.
