From 1500 onwards, the Dutch traded a total of around 500.000 people from Africa to the New World. In 1863, 150 years ago, the Netherlands were one of the last countries to finally abolish slavery. Prof. dr. Piet Emmer (Professor Emeritus in the History of European Expansion and Migration at Leiden University) introduces a complex and controversial history . He explains why it took so long for the Dutch to abolish slavery and what part the Dutch played.
