Pumping cooling gases into the global atmosphere, giant mirrors in the desert to reflect sunlight back into space, or how about an artificial nuclear winter to cool the Earth? These are just some of the ideas that have been proposed to reverse climate catastrophe. The science behind this is called geoengineering.
Geoengineering, also known as climate engineering is a term used for both carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation management when applied on a planetary scale. Geoengineering refers to possible technical solutions that can control the climate on a large scale in order to mitigate climate change. In this lecture, Dr. Jeroen Oomen will explain exactly what geoengineering is and take us through examples of its solutions. Will it be a miracle solution to the climate problem so that we can continue to pollute? Or is geoengineering false hope that will delay our real progress in the fight against global warming?
Dr. Jeroen Oomen is an assistant professor at the Urban Futures Studio at Utrecht University, where he focuses on the influence of social, cultural and scientific practices on societal perceptions of the future. His research focuses primarily on topics related to climate policy, geoengineering and social theory, with a particular emphasis on issues related to sustainability. He published a book on geoengineering in 2021 entitled Imagining Climate Engineering: Dreaming the Designer Climate.
