Kathryn Bigelow, VS 2017

language: english – subtitles: dutch

This film tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of '67.

Detroit is the latest film by renowned Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker). In line with her earlier work, Detroit is an impressive film based on true events. The film is set during the by racial inequality driven ‘12th Street Riots’ that held Detroit in its grip in the summer of 1967. During one of the biggest and most deadly civil unrests of American history, 43 people died, 189 were wounded and no less than 7200 were arrested.

The film focuses on one incident that happened during the riots at the Algiers Motel. Three African American civilians are killed by (white) police officers of the city of Detroit, the national police and three member of the National Guard. Star Wars actor John Boyega portrays the Afro-American surveillance guard Melvin Dismukes. He becomes entangled in the incident and seems completely powerless when he is accused of the murder by the white officers.
