Prof. dr. Neeltje Batelaan
Dinsdag 24 maart , 19:30 - 21:00
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Prijs: Gratis (Student) Gratis (Anderen)

What are you afraid of? Creepy spiders, confined spaces, speaking in front of a group of fellow students? Or are you fearless? During this interactive evening, TINT and Studium Generale will discuss and explore our perception of and approach to fears. From healthy thrills to all-consuming fears and everything in between. With fear expert Prof. dr. Neeltje Batelaan.

This program is jointly organized by TINT and Studium Generale.

It's normal to feel fear and tension. Everyone feels afraid or worried at  times. You are definitely not the only one who fears dogs or spiders, or who worries about exams, presentations, the climate, natural disasters, what others think of you, love, or life-changing decisions.

In fact, fear is essential: it protects you from dangerous situations and makes your body more alert. Often, you learn to align your fear with reality, either consciously or unconsciously, causing the feeling of fear to diminish or even disappear. In that light, seeking excitement from time to time can be a positive experience, although some people do it purely for the thrill. However, when fear starts to take over your life, it can  develop into an anxiety disorder.

This evening, we will discuss what fear is and how it works in our bodies, both physically and psychologically; how we deal with fears as individuals and as a society and how we can overcome them. We will (anonymously) explore the fears that exist among the audience and invite you to reflect upon your own fears. Prof. dr. Neeltje Batelaan, a psychiatrist and professor of anxiety-related disorders at the Department of Psychiatry of Amsterdam UMC, will share her knowledge from research and practice and there will be ample time to ask her questions. So, don’t be afraid to do so ;).
