Lecture 'The truth about lying' cancelled and replaced with 'Are the rich more greedy than the poor?'

Unfortunately the lecture 'The truth about lying' on Wednesday December 19th has to be postponed due to personal circumstances of the speaker. However, there will be an alternative lecture (also in English) by Dr. Jan Stoop: 'Are the rich more greedy than the poor?'

Are the rich more selfish than the poor? If you look at claims in the popular press, literature, music and the Bible, it seems like many people believe this to be the case. Up to date, scientific literature has indeed found some evidence that points to this belief, but most of this evidence comes from laboratory experiments. Behavioral economist Jan Stoop prefers to examine real-life behavior in a real-life setting; he is working on a natural field experiment on ethical behavior between upper class and lower class citizens in a medium sized city in the Netherlands. His results show striking differences between the two social classes. How can we understand these differences in behavior and what can they tell us about greediness and honesty?

Dr. Jan Stoop  is associate professor Applied Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
