The global outbreak of Covid-19 has ushered in a time of extreme politics. Governments rely on extraordinary measures to contain the spread of the virus and safeguard public health. Many of these measures are at odds with fundamental liberties such as freedom of movement and freedom of association. As many governments consider digital tracking systems, concerns about privacy rise. Does the Coronacrisis bolster the rise of authoritarian politics that already defined the pre-Corona world? In this lecture journalist Casper Thomas will discuss what the current pandemic means for political leadership in the world.
Casper Thomas is an editor at De Groene Amsterdammer, the oldest current affairs weekly in The Netherlands. He lives in Washington DC where he works as US correspondent for both De Groene Amsterdammer and Het Financieele Dagblad. He is the author of De autoritaire verleiding. Over de opmars van de antiliberale wereldorde (The authoritarian temptation. On the rise of the antiliberal worldorder), a 2018 book that investigates the appeal of authoritarian leaders and ‘illiberal democracy’.
