On 23 June 2016, a public vote was held to decide whether the United Kingdom should leave or remain the European Union. Of the more than 30 million people voting (72% of the British people), 51,9% voted in favor of leaving. After the referendum, the UK government formally announced the country's withdrawal on 29 March 2017, starting a two-year process that was due to conclude with the UK’s withdrawal on 29 March 2019. This made the Brexit – the British exit – a fact. At least, so it seemed. The UK parliament only needed to approve the withdrawal agreement, but eventually didn’t do so. A political game followed, resulting in many debates, fierce demonstrations, political conflict and rebellion, the fall of political leaders and extended deadlines. Business, industry, the financial and other sectors, EU citizens and of course the British people are facing major uncertainties. The UK was given until 31 October 2019 by the EU to reach an agreement. For those not following every twist and turn, this guide by BBC News covers the basics.

Vanessa Lamsvelt is a reporter for the Dutch TV program EenVandaag (AVROTROS), Brexit being one of her regular topics.
