Most of us want to make a difference. Effective altruism is about answering one simple question: how can we use our resources to help others the most?

Donating money to charity, helping refugees learn to speak a new language or dedicating one's career to combatting climate change; many people are moved to do something good. But overseeing the impact of your efforts is a difficult problem. If you don’t choose well, you risk wasting your time and money. If you really want to make a difference, what's the most effective way to give? Which cause should you support and what career choices will help you make a significant contribution?

Balancing emotion and practicality, effective altruism is a movement to help you analyze how to make the biggest impact with whatever you can share. It uses the scientific practice of evidence and careful analysis to work out how to help others as much as possible. Sjir Hoeijmakers explains how this methodology works and how it could provide you with some new and sometimes counterintuitive insights about doing the most good.

Sjir Hoeijmakers MSc is the CEO of the Effective Altruism Netherlands foundation. He has a background in econometrics and previously crowdfunded his own basic income to be able to devote time to advising about and lobbying for basic income related experiments.
