Future astronaut dr. Mindy Howard develops techniques for commercial space training that also help us earthlings achieve success on our current home planet.

It is often said that space changes your perspective on life. Many astronauts report having what is called a peak experience, when they stare back at earth with wonder that can change them forever. This experience is also referred to as the overview effect. Many people, like Mindy Howard, dream of one day going into space and experiencing similar sensations. And although Howard might be well on her way to make this a reality, for many of us going into space will always remain a dream. Fortunately though, the overview effect is not just reserved for astronauts.

According to Mindy Howard, everyone can experience the feeling of oneness with the universe – where we feel connected to everything and have a peak experience without even having to go into space. In her trainings for commercial space travel, she uses different astronaut techniques to teach commercial astronauts to calm the mind during stressful conditions, which facilitates a peak experience. In today’s lecture, she will not only inspire you with her personal story of pursuing her dreams – no matter the obstacles – but also explain how you can train like an astronaut for success here on earth.

Dr. ir. Mindy Howard is the founder of Inner Space Training, a company that develops and delivers training for commercial astronauts to help them with psychological acclimation to the different flight phases. Mindy Howard is also a TU/e alumna and plans to become the first Dutch woman in space in 2023, joining a commercial flight into space as a coach and crew member after training the astronauts before their flight. She has recently published her book Blast Off! Train like an astronaut for success on earth, in which she explains how to use the techniques of commercial astronaut training to help people successfully overcome the day-to-day challenges and obstacles in their personal and professional lives.
