Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium

Searching for evidence from the comfort of your chair --  it sounds safe, but it also comes with great responsibility. How do you uncover state secrets by using public sources on the Internet? In this lecture, Foeke Postma will talk about how citizen journalism platform Bellingcat has revealed many international secrets.

For the past couple of years, #OSINT has been the hottest term in journalism: Open Source Intelligence. What information is hidden in public data on the Internet? And what online techniques can you use to uncover that information? Open-source researcher Foeke Postma will tell you all about his work at Bellingcat, where he, for example, investigates nuclear weapons and illegal animal trade. He will teach you all about the different ways of uncovering secrets on the Internet.

Investigative journalism is essential in a healthy democracy. Today, however, it is under worldwide threat. Bellingcat is an investigative collective that uses social media, Google Earth and online documents to monitor those in power. It’s an independent international collective of researchers and journalists headquartered in the Netherlands who use open source and social media research to investigate a variety of topics: from MH17, chemical weapons in Syria, the poisoning of Navalny, to the war in Ukraine, Mexican drug lords, tracking the use of chemical weapons, and conflicts worldwide.

With staff in more than 20 countries around the world, they operate in a unique field where cutting-edge technology, forensics, journalism, investigations, transparency, and accountability come together.

The truth... is out there.......

Documentary Navalny
Do you want to know more about the work of Bellingcat? Come and see the Documentary Navalny in de Zwarte Doos at 19.30 on Wednesday 7 September. This spine-chilling film could have been the best spy thriller of this year, if everything that happens was not actually true.
