He might be considered one of the best novelists in the Netherlands of the past 25 years, and TU/e has wisely chosen him, in its lustrum year #TUE65, to be The Artist-in-Residence 2021: Arnon Grunberg. Join this first of three public events where Arnon Grunberg will kick off the search for answers regarding ‘The Ethical Casino’.

Please Note: This program bears the SG&USE label and is therefore part of education. This means a maximum of 75 people are allowed into the room, no 1.5 meter of social distancing is required, and no Covid-19 access certificate is needed. Currently this program is sold out. If you have not managed to reserve a ticket you can still watch the livestream on YouTube or Facebook.

“How far can you go to create an equal society?” That is the main question that will be explored and answered during this year’s Artist-in-Residence educational program in which 25 TU/e students will participate and which will be led by Arnon Grunberg himself. Together, they will investigate what equality exactly means and whether meritocracy is a workable concept. Meritocracy is a model in which it is not your background but your efforts and skills that determine where you end up on the social ladder.

This evening, Uomo Universale Grunberg -- being not only a novelist, columnist and  journalist but also quite a philosopher and opinion maker -- will meet the 25 selected students in his ‘Expeditie Grunberg’ and will kick off The Ethical Casino with a lecture full of  erudition, questions and a hint of Nietzsche. Is there space for heroism in a truly equal world? Faites vos yeux!

Artist-in-Residence educational program

This year’s Artist-in-Residence program is organized as part of the TU/e lustrum ‘Heroes like you’ and in collaboration with Verstegen & Stigter Cultural Projects. It consists of six masterclasses and a weekend excursion with a selection of 25 students, all of which will take place in the fall.

There will also be three public events of which this lecture is the first one. It will be followed by a talk show on October 13, and the final presentation of the results of the masterclasses will be held on November 17.

Please note: only book a ticket if you want to attend this program on campus. To watch the livestream, please do not reserve a ticket.
