Exhibition

Christo and Centre for International Light Art Unna sold out

Thursday, November 28 2013, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM (sold out)
Departure between Auditorium and HG

The exhibition Big Air Package is the latest project from artist Christo installed at the Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany. It is the largest ever inflated envelope without aid of a skeleton and reaches 90 meters high, with a diameter of 50 meters and a volume of 177,000 cubic meters. It is possible to walk around the sculpture and to enter the package. Inside the sculpture, an extraordinary experience of shape, space and light is provided.

The Big Air Package nearly spans the distance from wall to wall of the Gasometer, leaving only a small passage to walk around the sculpture. Two air fans creating a constant pressure of 27 pascal (0.27 millibar) keep the package upright. Airlocks allow visitors to enter the package. Illuminated through the skylights of the Gasometer and 60 additional projectors, the work of art creates a diffuse light throughout the interior. Inside the sculpture, an extraordinary experience of shape, space and light is provided.“The inner space is probably the most unique aspect of all the Air Packages that we did since 1966. When experienced from the inside, that space is almost like a 90-meter-high cathedral”, the artist describes his latest work of art, which is the first one realized without his late wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude.

At the Centre for International Light Art in Unna there is 10 metres underground a mysterious world of light and shadow. Eleven internationally renowned artists are presented in the permanent exhibition. The spectator is thus enabled to form a comprehensive picture of the different manifestations and forms of this relatively young genre of light art.
Twelve of the internationally most renowned light artists have designed permanent installations for the cellars of the former Linden Brewery: Mario Merz, Joseph Kosuth, James Turrell, Mischa Kuball, Christina Kubisch, Brigitte Kowanz, Johannes Dinnebier, Keith Sonnier, François Morellet, Christian Boltanski, Jan van Munster und Olafur Eliasson.
