Witness the opening concert of the epicentre of classical chamber music. What is chamber music? It’s classical music that suits a palace chamber, and for its intimate nature, it is described as ‘the music of friends’. The highly regarded Storioni Festival will open at our university with the well-known Storioni Trio.

PLEASE NOTE: this concert can only be watched via a (free) livestream*.

This will be chamber music heaven. Yes, big words indeed, but you won’t regret experiencing this. The Storioni-festival is a must-hear event for classical music lovers.

The key-player in this is the Storioni Trio: pianist Bart van de Roer, violinist Wouter Vossen and cello player Marc Vossen. And did you know that 'Storioni' stems from the Laorentius Storioni violin from Cremona 1794?

This trio will give a live streamed concert in which they will perform compositions by Sibelius and Camille Saint-Saëns.

Marc Vossen said about his choice for Sibelius: "As a child, I was always enchanted by Sibelius' violin concerto. To my great regret, this Finnish composer, a hero in that country and the author of the popular song Finlandia, never wrote a cello concerto. This Theme and Variations for solo cello makes up for a lot for me; a beautiful melody and virtuosic challenges."

The trio’s other featured composer, Camille Saint Saëns, grew up a musical prodigy. At age 10, he played all 32 of Beethoven's piano sonatas by heart. Quickly, his talent as a composer also became apparent and he became a national sensation. Wouter Vossen: "This piano trio is a fine example of his work; beautiful melodies and cheerful, playful themes." Unfortunately, Saint Saëns' heroic status proved to have only a limited shelf life, for at the end of his life, the new generation of French composers (Debussy and Ravel) completely outstripped him. "We enjoy playing this trio very much because of its uncomplicated and cheerful character," says Ravel.

But now, let’s forget about these words and get back to what it’s really about -- the music. What music? Music of friends….

Storioni Festival
The Storioni Trio and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven initiated this chamber music festival of international stature back in 2007. Many successful editions have followed, with the anniversary edition in 2017 being one of the highlights. With full halls and audiences eagerly awaiting the next edition, and with international musicians of top quality, this festival managed to put itself on the map through exceptional programs and collaborations with leading musicians such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Pekka Kuusisto, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Gidon Kremer, Kathryn Stott, Mischa Maisky, Vadim Repin and Sol Gabetta. Since its inception, it has provided wonderful music and entertainment.

In 2019, the decision was made to change the format and create a completely new festival while retaining the quality of all the previous editions. What, of course, has remained is the Storioni Trio inviting many (international) musical friends. The Storioni Festival has turned into a true city festival – one that’s connected to the DNA of Eindhoven, of technology, of design and science.

* Initially two (similar) live concerts by the Storioni Trio were planned to take place at the Blauwe Zaal in the Auditorium on the TU/e campus. Due to the continuation of the current Covid-19 measures it is unfortunately not possible to have a live audience present during the concerts. It has therefore been decided to offer everyone a chance to see the musicians perform via one free live streamed concert that can be watched via the Studium Generale YouTube channel and  Facebook page from 12:30 - 13:30.
